Living and Selling the African Experience

Travel Upcountry. Everyone sees things differently.

At least once a year, we leave the screens behind, vanish from LinkedIn, Instagram, and our daily routines, and head out on a road trip upcountry.

It’s the perfect opportunity – not just to reconnect as a family, but for me to experience firsthand what has changed along the routes we offer. I get to see new roads, revisit familiar places, and, most importantly, experience everything as our guests would. This helps us set the right expectations for the journeys we design.

We do these trips together – my partner and our boys – because each of us experiences it in our own way. What catches their attention, what excites them, what stays with them… and yes, what makes them grumpy often differs from mine. And that’s exactly the beauty of it all.

We get out of Kampala through the thick of traffic. Somewhere along the way, unplanned, we stop. Maybe it’s a roadside snack, a boulder that stands out — and we climb it, or a seasonal waterfall we’ve never visited before.

The baby tortoise crossing the road.
The manual petrol pump when electricity is down.
The newspaper of yesterday on display in the main street shop.

Or simply engaging the vehicle in Low Gear when roads turn into mud-pools.

Those are the moments we’ll talk about later.

And they’re also the reason our journeys are designed the way they are – not just around lodges and itineraries, but around the unexpected moments in between.
