Africa Beyond Borders is a fully independent Destination Management Company based in Kampala — specializing exclusively in tailor-made journeys across Uganda since 2009.
At the heart of it is founder Diederik Vandenhoeke – Belgian by birth, African by upbringing. He grew up in Burundi, travelled through Central, East, and Southern Africa as a child, and never really stopped moving.
Over three decades, he worked with an NGO in Tanzania, marketed a tourism business on the Kenyan coast, guided across Southern Africa, and consulted on East Africa for one of Cape Town’s leading tour operators. Uganda, eventually, became home.
He puts it simply:
“I have a deep passion for this vibrant continent — its people, its cultures, its wildlife. I’ve been privileged to live across Africa for over 30 years and I feel completely at home here. I respect a wide range of norms and values, even if they aren’t necessarily my own. One thing I’m certain of — there is so much we can learn from one another.”

With over two decades in the East African safari industry, Okech Obur is one of Uganda’s most experienced and respected naturalist guides – a man who doesn’t just know the bush, but has lived and worked deep inside it.
Okech’s journey began in 1999 at the legendary Semliki Safari Lodge, where he rose quickly from assistant manager to general manager, before taking on one of the most remarkable roles in Ugandan conservation history – Assistant Project Director of the Semliki Chimpanzee Project, sponsored by Indiana University. For a full year, he researched chimpanzee behavior in the wild, an experience that shaped his profound understanding of Uganda’s primate world and set him apart from virtually every other guide in the region.
A trained boat captain and accomplished birder, Okech spent years guiding tourists, sport fishing, and birdwatching on the southern shores of Lake Albert – developing an encyclopedic knowledge of Uganda’s waterways, wetlands, and wildlife. His birding instinct, in particular, is regarded as exceptional.
Fluent in English, Acholi, Runyakitara, and Swahili, Okech brings warmth, depth, and genuine passion to every journey.

With fifteen years at the heart of Uganda’s safari and hospitality industry, Pamela is a tour consultant of rare warmth and depth – a woman who doesn’t just arrange safaris, but brings them to life with a passion that is, quite simply, contagious.
Pamela’s journey is rooted in Uganda itself. Born and raised here, she built her career from the ground up as a Safari Reservationist and Tour Consultant, mastering every detail of what it takes to turn a journey into an unforgettable experience. Her deep familiarity with the country – its landscapes, its people, its rhythms – gives her an instinct for crafting itineraries that feel personal, seamless, and alive.
Beyond logistics, Pamela has long championed the transformative power of community tourism. During her time with a pioneering organization founded to provide authentic local perspectives, promote cultural self-respect, and drive community development across southwestern Uganda, she spearheaded initiatives harnessing tourism as a force for empowering women and local communities – a cause she remains deeply committed to.
